Division
The Center for Translational Microbiome Research (CTMR) was started in January 2016 as a collaboration between Karolinska Institutet, Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab) and Ferring Pharmaceuticals.

The center builds on a deep understanding of translational microbiome research and has established a broad technical, biological, clinical and epidemiological platform for studying complex microbiological communities in well-defined human materials. CTMR aims to better understand the contribution of the human microbiome to physiology and pathophysiology with the goal to open opportunities for development of novel therapies in the area of gastroenterology, reproductive health and neonatology.

Duties
We are looking for an aspiring research engineer to join the team as a developer at The Center for Translational Microbiome Research (CTMR). The position demands independence, flexibility and strong problem solving skills. Daily tasks involve occasional interactions with clinicians, geneticists, other software developers, and close collaboration with a team of bioinformaticians. The position concerns a central role that connects essentially all aspects of the studies performed at our research center. We offer an environment with a diverse set of people that combines work directly associated to research in the human health field with opportunities to implement and develop reliable and maintainable solutions to interesting complex challenges at the forefront of research.

The software developer position concerns the following main tasks:

- Develop and manage accessible and secure web interfaces for sample registration
- Develop and manage integration of laboratory information management systems (LIMS) for research samples
- Develop and manage SQL and NoSQL databases and interaction systems to integrate data from several sources
- Continuous management of research data in a secure and reliable way according to relevant laws and regulations
- Design and implement systems for optimizing data workflows and data access for research purposes

Qualifications
Candidates should hold a BSc in engineering or equivalent, but having a formal degree is not a strict requirement. Regardless of background we expect the candidate to have a strong interest in delivering robust solutions to research-related challenges. Excellent technical and practical skills in software development, and possibly previous experience of working with database systems, is especially beneficial. You are a careful and detail oriented person, not afraid of responsibility and keen on interacting with external collaborators that are experts in a wide variety of fields connected to our research. You have a strong desire to deliver high quality work, and have experience working independently. We put great emphasis on personal suitability.

Applicants must have:

- Python web programming experience
- Experience in Linux/Unix system administration
- Experience working with SQL and/or NoSQL databases such as PostGreSQL or MongoDB
- Basic front-end web programming skills
- Fluency in English
- Excellent oral and written communication skills

Furthermore, it is beneficial if the applicant has:

- Familiarity with collaborative code development using distributed version control software such as Git, and services such as Github.
- DevOps experience, continuous integration, workflow automation
- An interest in microbiological research and the connection between our microbes and our health
- LIMS experience (Clarity LIMS)
- General bioinformatics experience
- Insight into or experience working with GDPR
- Experience with genomics and high-throughput sequencing data
- Experience working with High-Performance Computing systems
