Job description

Industrial PhD position within traffic simulation at the Vehicle Energy Efficiency group, Volvo Cars, with the purpose to study and evaluate single cars and vehicle fleets in future mobility solutions, and to further develop traffic system simulation tools.

What we offer?

You will be working in a stimulating research environment with the topics of the future in a small but focused research team with a very attractive employer.

One of the team’s most important contribution was in the 4 years research project together with Swedish Authority “Swedish Transport Administration”. The project was to define and evaluate the impact of autonomous drive on sustainable mobility for e.g. energy efficiency.

Vehicle Energy Efficiency belongs to the department Environment and Fluid Dynamics Centre. The department is responsible for the core value Environment at Volvo Car’s R&D and has about 120 employees.

What you`ll do?

The purpose of this industrial PhD project is to develop, perform and evaluate system level traffic simulations, where both individual vehicles (including car functions and attributes) as well as whole vehicle fleets, can be tested and evaluated from an efficiency and environmental perspective. This includes finding, implementing and analyzing future mobility scenarios, vehicle properties and efficiency parameters.

You will be an important part of an agile traffic simulation research team consisting of 3-5 motivated researchers and engineers, belonging to the larger group Vehicle Energy Efficiency consisting of approximately 40 engineers. This project is a collaboration with Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, and you will be situated one day of the week on campus with the Automatic Control research group, which will allow for a deeper understanding of the subject and contribute to a more efficient research development. A supervisor’s support will be available at both locations.

Your work will include a deep-dive into the traffic simulation and future mobility field, model and software development, as well as evaluation and analysis of specific derived research questions on the subject. In addition, as a Ph.D. student you will also complete relevant graduate level courses, publish peer-reviewed journal articles, attend conferences and workshops, and complete a licentiate and a doctor’s degree.

As a member of the Volvo PhD Program, you’re offered a permanent position with Volvo Cars from day 1, and upon completion of the PhD, your role is redefined within the company to assume the next level position. Location of employment is at Volvo Cars Corporation, Gothenburg.

Do you fit the profile?

We believe that our selected candidate should have:

M.Sc. in Computer Science, Data Science, Physics, Mathematics or similar.

A genuine interest in programming, where experience with Python and Java is preferable.

Experience in computational modeling. Development of simulation environments is meritorious.

Knowledge of traffic simulation theory and software (e.g., MATSim, SUMO) is meritorious.

To qualify as an industrial PhD student, you must have a solid background in areas mentioned above, corresponding to a master's level degree i.e. completed academic courses of at least 240 credits (ECTS) of which at least 60 credits (ECTS) are at advanced level including independent thesis writing of at least 15 credits (ECTS) at advanced level, within the field. As for all PhD studies, a genuine interest and curiosity in the subject matter and excellent analytical and communication skills, both oral and written, are needed.

Who are you?

This work demands a person that is self-driven, independent and able to take initiatives, sees the overall picture and logical patterns, but is also able to go into a detailed analysis of things.

We are searching for a highly motivated, creative and curious person, with a strong analytical and scientific mind-set, who is a natural team player.

If you find this interesting and you recognize yourself in the desired profile, consider applying for this opportunity and reach out to us for more information.
