We believe that privacy is fundamental to a well-functioning society where norms, ethics, and laws can safely be discussed and challenged. That same society cannot flourish and develop - nor can it exist - without privacy. This is why we provide a VPN service: because privacy is paramount, and apparently not only to us. The Mullvad VPN (https://mullvad.net/en/) community is growing, and the infrastructure is the most integral part of our product. The stability of our VPN relays, our API and supporting services is of utmost importance, if we are to provide the best privacy-focused tools for our users. That is why we are looking for yet another Infrastructure Engineer. Do you believe in making internet censorship and mass surveillance ineffective?
As Infrastructure Engineer
With the ever-growing infrastructure spanning the globe, our Infrastructure team needs to grow in order to expedite, iterate upon and improve the delivery, monitoring and scaling of our services (the number of servers will soon increase to over 1,000). Here you will collaborate with the Services, Operations and Support teams to ensure that our services are functioning optimally (helping where necessary with projects that improve how we deploy, monitor and scale our services). At the beginning of November, we will focus further on our System Transparency project (https://mullvad.net/en/blog/2019/6/3/system-transparency-future/) and hopefully bolster our trustworthiness.
Additionally, we have projects in the pipeline that revolve around adding a more thorough testing and implementation model for our Ansible configuration management set up, as well as ways to work more integrated with CI/CD tools, and our own DNS servers.
We are looking for you...
who values short iteration cycles. Who can sketch something out in a quick script only to perfect it over time, and like us, loves to discuss how we could collect and store less data. If you can also see areas for potential improvement, whether it be speed, security or technology and have the ability to identify, prototype and implement quickly; then you are one of us. So, bring your profoundly curious mind for systems with a heavy focus on security and privacy - and apply!
Our four wishes:
Extensive knowledge and experience in Ansible (or similar SCM tools: Salt, Chef, Puppet, etc) is of most importance. The same applies to Bash and/or Python, Docker and Ubuntu Linux (ideally on bare metal servers).
Security/Privacy/Networking interests or experience are very valuable.
Experience with Golang is a plus, but not required.
Our team consists of people from various countries and backgrounds: you are expected to have good communication skills in English.
Why Mullvad VPN?
Privacy and freedom. As we breathe for the universal right to privacy, we also believe in life outside of work. We work mostly on-site at the office but have a lot of freedom in allocating our work hours as we like and most of us work remotely a least a couple of days each week. Furthermore, we allocate €500 annually in allowances toward wellness-related activities and offer opportunities for growth aside from company-initiated ones, for attending various national and international conferences (digital only for now). We are a bunch of diversified peeps: from vegans to Marathon runners, sport nerds to computer nerds. What unite us? Our very security- and privacy-focused company culture, that is highly influenced by a strong emphasis on a no-blame culture. You want in?
This is an ongoing, full-time position that we hope to fill as soon as possible, so don’t wait too long with your application written in English.
