The Science Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Scientific Software Developer in the Data Analysis and Modelling Group at the ESS Data Management and Software Centre (DMSC) in Copenhagen, Denmark

Description of directorate/division

The DMSC is organizationally a Division of the Science Directorate of ESS and is responsible for the design, development and construction of the computer software and hardware to be used for the operation and data analysis of the experiments to be carried out on the neutron scattering and imaging instruments to be constructed at ESS in Lund.

These two Scientific Software Developer positions will be within the Data analaysis and Modeling group of DMSC whose mission is to deliver the software and modelling tools that are critical for analysing and understanding experimental data from ESS. Beyond this mission, the group has a long-term vision of enabling new types of experiments and making more users capable of exploiting ESS due to excellent software and new types of modelling tools, for instance based on atomic-scale modelling and simulations. As such the group's activities span over software engineering, data analysis, instrument simulations, and atomic-scale modelling and simulations always with the aim of providing useful tools for the neutron scattering community and the future users of ESS.

To meet our goals we will utilize development effort and expertise from ESS staff and European partner laboratories as well as engaging actively in open source software projects. These projects are primarily with other neutron sources world wide and based on the programming languages C++ and Python. Moreover, the group also engages in research activities with universities.

Description of main responsibilities

The roles of the advertised positions will be to take a leading role in researching, developing, and testing software for analysis of neutron scattering and imaging experiments. The effort is part of a Pan-European project, named world class Science and Innovation with Neutrons in Europe for 2020 (SINE2020) and is funded by the European Union. The aim is to provide user-friendly, sustainable and inter-operable data analysis software for the major neutron sources in Europe. The ESS Data Analysis and Modelling Group will in this project specifically focus on software for analysing and modelling data from Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS), powder diffraction, and imaging experiments. It is envisioned that one of the two positions will focus on SANS, and the other one on powder diffraction and imaging but alternative ways of splitting the work might also be possible depending on the candidates' background and interests. Close collaboration with existing staff at DMSC, scientists at ESS in Lund as well as with staff at other European neutron sources, SINQ in Switzerland, ILL and LLB in France, ISIS in UK, and the Meier-Leibnitz Zentrum in Germany, is expected.

Qualifications

We are looking for candidates with a track record of software development in larger scientific and / or technical projects in an object-oriented language. A background in neutron scattering, materials science, or computer simulations (e.g. molecular and materials modelling and simulations) is desirable.

• A degree in one of the natural sciences, computer science, engineering or substantial equivalent experience is required.
• Experience with implementing and optimising algorithms, particularly for parallel architectures, is an added plus.
• You should be comfortable developing in C++ and Python on Linux based operating systems.

To be successful and perform well in this position, you are:

• Systematic and have excellent analytical skills.
• Excellent at collaboration but yet able to lead areas of work and work independently.
• Adept at communicating both orally and written and with the ability to effectively communicate and discuss complex ideas.
• Happy with working in diverse cultural teams and with international partners.

Our work environment is characterised by fast growth, high rate of work, and an international atmosphere with highly academic personnel. You must therefore enjoy the diversity of such and have a personality suited for the challenges it holds. In this growing organisation you will have the possibility to take part in developing new routines and processes. Our work environment is exciting and forward thinking and relies heavily on personal initiative.

Duration & Location
