DICE is also home of the Frostbite Engine, Star Wars: Battlefront, as well as being the creators of Mirror’s Edge.

Role Overview

We – DICE Operations – are looking for a talented and driven person that is passionate about developing software systems for games with millions of users. You will be working in the Live team, a small group that are involved in launch and maintenance for all DICE games & systems. You will be working with a large number of systems; some developed at DICE, some developed externally. You will be collaborating with a lot of different teams within EA on a regular basis. You will work with a broad range of technology, from old school Java/SQL based platforms to fancy Python/Scala systems pushing lots of data through Cassandra/Redis/MySQL clusters.

The challenge ahead

We are looking for an experienced systems engineer to work in the Live Services team at DICE Operations. The core purpose of the Live Services team is to ensure that all online functionality in DICEs games is functioning properly.

This position is mainly an operational role — part system administrator, part software engineer. There is an element of firefighting to the role; if things stop working, the Live Services team will handle it. Part of the role is therefore to do strategic work to minimize the amount of future firefighting.

What a Systems Engineer does at DICE Operations

You will deploy, monitor, manage and analyze modern services that scale to millions of users, and handle terabytes of data. System scalability, availability and performance are of utmost importance. You will also design and implement applications to improve operational procedures and automation. You will be part of a small, highly skilled, agile team that operates on the frontlines of software technology in a startup-like environment. You will be part of a rotating shift handling 2nd line support for DICEs systems.

The next great Systems Engineer also needs

Our ideal candidate…

  • Has a strong desire to learn new things!
  • Has at least 5 years’ experience of system operations and software development.
  • Has expert level skill in any of the common high-level programming languages, such as Python.
  • Has experience of modern distributed systems and web application scaling, including virtualization, clustering, sharding and fail-over solutions.
  • Has expert level knowledge of Unix/Linux platforms. Windows experience is an advantage.
  • Has experience of continuous integration and automated system deployment. Acquaintance with Puppet or Chef is an advantage.
  • Has a detailed understanding of system performance and system monitoring.
  • Has experience of deployments on cloud platforms, especially Amazon Web Services.
  • Has strong language skills – excellent spoken and written English is a must, and preferably Swedish as well.
  • Has experience of practical software engineering, preferably having experienced at least one product launch.

Good to have

  • Contributions to Open Source projects is a plus.
  • Experience of operating web-scale systems, (i.e. massive sites like Facebook and Twitter) is advantageous.
  • An interest in games is advantageous.

What’s in it for you? Glad you asked!

At DICE we take care of our staff and have done so during our steady growth over the last decade. In addition to a competitive compensation package we offer our employees 10 EA games per year, massage every three weeks, a variety of sports activities (yoga and cross fit to name a few) and health care allowance. We have a collective bargain agreement with Unionen and also provide our employees’ with pension; ITP 1 or ITP 2.

Although we enjoy working hard at DICE, we respect and value our employees’ personal lives. A good work-life balance is something we practice and maintain even during high-intensity periods.

We look forward to receiving your application!
