SCALE FISHBRAIN’S DEVOPS PRACTICES AND OUR SERVER INFRASTRUCTURE!

We are the leading social network for anglers (professional and amateur enthusiast fishermen and women). We successfully created and launched our mobile app on iOS and Android. Already, we have secured over 1 million users and we continue to grow! Our server infrastructure to support our users is currently about 100 server instances hosted with Amazon.

Over the last year, we have been featured in AppStore, Forbes, TechCrunch, Bloomberg, VentureBeat, etc, and have become the leading companion apps for anglers. Our team is based in Stockholm and consists of very talented people from all around the world.

WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU?

As a DevOps engineer at Fishbrain, you will help us secure, stabilize and scale our infrastructure around the world. You will also support our developers in getting everything that’s sever-and-not-code out of their way so they focus on what makes them kick ass, while you can focus on doing the exact same thing for you.

We’re currently undergoing a major transition from hosting our infrastructure in one datacenter to more locations around the globe. We’re also growing our software engineering team who deploy code on our infrastructure every day!

Right now, infrastructure and DevOps is a one man team. We’re looking for someone who can help make this team bigger, and help us keep doing our best to empower our developers in caring about code and not servers, on top of providing a reliable, scalable and secure infrastructure for our users.

Code-wise, Fishbrain is using a microservice architecture, and we have a large variety of stacks in production as a result. A few of the major technologies we’re using: 

ON THE BACKEND CODE SIDE:

• Ruby on Rails
• Node.js
• Go
• Some PHP that we’re progressively migrating away from

ON THE INFRASTRUCTURE, OPS AND SERVER TECH SIDE:

• AWS, mainly for EC2 (server instances) / Route 53 (DNS) / ELB (load balancers) / S3 (Object Storage) and EBS (Block Storage)
• Travis CI for continuous integration and continuous deployment of all the code that makes Fishbrain.
• Ansible to provision our server instances and perform the actual deployment our backend code
• NewRelic for most of our app-level monitoring
• MySQL, MariaDB MaxScale and Postgres
• Memcache & Redis
• Hardened Gentoo
• ZFS
• NSQ
• ElasticSearch

We don’t expect you to be an expert in all of these, but some degree of familiarity with some of the technologies we’re using will go a long way. What we really want above all else is someone who’s enthusiastic about using their server and cloud infrastructure skills to support a great team and support the growth of the Fishbrain platform.
