The Science Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a mechatronics engineer for equipment integration within the Scientific Activities Division (SAD).

Description of directorate/division/group
During ESS construction, SAD is responsible for the scientific support laboratories, sample environment and user office. In this SAD helps setting the policies on designing, building and operating a science driven experimental facility.

Within ESS the Mechatronics and Software integration (MESI) platform is responsible for all integration of sample environment equipment and operates as part of SAD. The MESI platform will support all instruments by the integration of sample environment equipment into the ESS control system, and also defining and standardizing the interfaces of this equipment at various instruments.

Description of main responsibilities
The main focus for this position is the development of a standard communication protocol for sample environment equipment. Sample environment equipment examples are linear changers, furnaces, humidity cells, stress strain analysis, pump-probe etc. The protocol standard will be developed as part of the EU H2020 project SINE2020.

Your task at MESI will be on defining a new standard together with other European facilities and to develop the adaptation of the protocol in the ESS facility wide EPICS control system. You will work with our EU project partners and internally with instrument teams and other sample environment platforms within SAD.

Furthermore you will have close cooperation with the integrated control systems division responsible for EPICS at ESS. The position will also require assisting with development and testing the integration and setting up development systems and outfitting of labs at ESS.

Qualifications
You have a master in engineering or potentially a bachelor with suitable experience. The position will be focused towards computer engineering but a mix with experience from electronics or mechatronics are highly valued.

Skills in software development with e.g. C, C++, Python are required and knowledge in embedded systems are positive.   A suitable background from working with protocols, control systems, software integration or communication is highly favorable.

At ESS it will be as important to be able to work independently and push the work forward as it will be to function well in international teams. Preference will be given to candidates with hands-on experience from existing facilities.

The evaluation will be based on technical qualification. However, a genuine interest in this technology area and a positive approach will come a long way. It is important that you recognize the value of consulting others in order to succeed.

A development project such as this requires the ability to adapt and cope with changing circumstances. Work in an international environment will challenge your ability to handle cultural diversity, it is therefore important that you have successfully managed this in previous employments. Experience of working in an international environment is essential and we expect you to be fluent in written and spoken English.

As a person you are positive, open minded, creative, organized and motivated. You need to be able to cope with projects in development, which can involve changing project directions and frames. To make all interests meet it is important to be able to both listen to input, but still to be able to make decision to move forward
