Call for Postdoctoral Fellow in the Biomedical Computing Department

About Simula
Simula Research Laboratory AS is a publicly owned research institute located outside Oslo, Norway. It is a multi-cultural organization, employing about 150 individuals from 30 countries. Simula is conducting ICT research in the fields of communication technology, scientific computing and software engineering. Simula's main objective is to generate new understanding and create vital knowledge about fundamental scientific challenges that are of genuine value for society. This is achieved through high quality research, education of graduate students, industry collaboration, technology transfer and commercialization.

Project Description
The Automated Uncertainty Quantification for Numerical Solutions of Partial Differential Equations (AUQ-PDE) project is a three year project funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers (Nordforsk). The project is hosted by the Biomedical Computing Department at Simula Research Laboratory in collaboration with Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Helsinki. The AUQ-PDE project aims to develop and integrate generic software featuring a high degree of automation for uncertainty quantification in computational models governed by partial differential equations and to apply the developed tools to a select set of research questions stemming from the in silico study of physiological processes. For more details on the AUQ-PDE project, see https://www.simula.no/research/projects/auq-pde.

The Biomedical Computing department (BioComp) at Simula Research Laboratory, Norway, is driven by medical challenges in researching new simulation technology. Our research is strongly multi-disciplinary, with teams of experts in physical modelling, mathematics, numerical methods, scientific software development, bioengineering, medical research, and clinical treatment. The department is a driving force behind the development of The FEniCS Project (fenicsproject.org), a collaborative project for the development of innovative concepts and tools for automated scientific computing, with a particular focus on automated solution of differential equations by finite element methods.

Responsibilities
We are seeking a 2 year full time postdoctoral fellow at Simula Research Laboratory to work on developing and integrating software for both forward and inverse uncertainty quantification in the numerical solution of partial differential equations using finite element methods. The work will be performed in the context of the FEniCS Project and dolfin-adjoint (dolfin-adjoint.org), winner of the 2015 Wilkinson Prize for Numerical Software. The successful candidate is expected to design and develop extensions to the FEniCS software for supporting high dimensional tensor product structures, to design a framework for Bayesian inversion of FEniCS-based models and to apply these techniques in the context of computational cardiac modelling. The candidate will interact closely with an international team at Simula Research Laboratory, Chalmers University of Technology and University of Helsinki.

Your Profile
Interested applicants should:

* Hold a Ph.D. degree or equivalent in Applied Mathematics, Scientific Computing, Computer
Science, or related fields.
* Have demonstrated knowledge of stochastic methods and uncertainty quantification
* Have solid programming skills and experience writing non-trivial programs in Python.
* Demonstrate an excellent level of spoken and written English.
* Possess good interpersonal skills and show willingness to work as part of an international team.

Simula Offers
* A highly dynamic and motivated team of international researchers and engineers.
* Offices are a 15 minute drive or short boat trip from the centre of Oslo.
* An informal and inclusive international working environment.
* Professional courses and workshops led by international experts on topics such as
Communication of Scientific Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and Writing Effective Research Proposals.
* A competitive salary.

Simula strives to achieve a good balance between male and female employees, and women are particularly encouraged to apply.

Application Requirements
Interested applicants are encouraged to submit the following:

* Curriculum vitae (summarizing education, positions, and academic or industrial work -
scientific publications and software development experience).
* Cover letter explaining the candidate's background, qualifications and research interests.
* Names and contact details of 2-3 references (name, relation to candidate, e-mail and telephone number)

Note that all attachments MUST be submitted in PDF format. To avoid misplacement, please make sure to include your first and last name in the filenames of all documents that you send us.

The application deadline is January 15 2016. The starting date is as early as possible in 2016 and no later than March 31 2016. We are interested in how you first came to learn about this position - please let us know in your cover letter.
