Background

In the coming years, investments amounting to many billions will be made in large projects in the regions of Norrbotten and Västerbotten in Northern Sweden. Luleå University of Technology is involved in several of these cutting-edge research projects and offers a broad range of courses and study programmes to match the skills in demand.

The research topic of Pervasive and Mobile Computing focuses on basic and application-oriented research in software systems, distributed applications, and human-computer interaction in several application areas. In recent years, the group has also focused specifically on how computer game technology can be applied to new areas such as health, education, and entertainment. We are now searching for a postdoctoral fellowship in applied game technology in the healthcare domain.

Project description

This multidisciplinary project will be done in collaboration with researchers both within and outside the research group, as well as with several different external partners. The project aimed to develop, and research personalized virtual reality, games, and gamification interventions for addressing mental health among young women. Through a randomized controlled trial and sensor data, the researchers will use VR-based cognitive behavioral therapy (VR-CBT) design together with physiological sensor data, and gamification to address anxiety and nervousness in young women. The project aims to promote sustainable change using VR-based therapy through the involvement of young women and an in-depth collaboration between various actors, such as the public health sector and academia.

The postdoc fellowship is funded by the Kempe Foundations and the project will be conducted in close collaboration with scientists specialized in computer games and interactive systems and psychology at Luleå University of Technology.

The postdoctoral scholar will be actively involved in the ideation, design, and implementation of virtual reality games and gamification for addressing mental health issues. Besides, a postdoctoral scholar is expected to perform research and education to prepare for future academic positions.

Qualifications

The qualifying background for applicants is a doctoral degree in Computer Science or equivalent. Priority is given to candidates who have completed a doctoral degree within three years before the application deadline. You must be able to express yourself in English, at an advanced level, in writing, and orally. The following criteria are highly considered:

  • Documented experience, knowledge, theory, methods, and research in game development, interactive systems, and medical computing.
  • Documented aptitude and ability in the development of game engines and 3D environments, XR (VR, AR, MR), games, and gamification development (portfolio) with frameworks such as Unity3D and/or Unreal Engine 5.
  • Proven competence and skills in several programming languages ​g., C#, C++.
  • Experience with physiological sensor data collection, analysis, and interpretation.
  • Experience in design-driven methodologies (participatory, co-design, design science research), and experimental designs.
  • Ability to perform and publish high-quality research in the multidisciplinary domain.

We are looking for enthusiastic candidates who can conduct modern research both independently and as a part of a team. The candidate must have good knowledge of English, both in writing and orally suitable to present and publish research results.

Further information

The postdoctoral fellowship is awarded for two years with placement in Skellefteå. The awarded scholarship recipient receives a scholarship of SEK 28 000 per month, which is higher than the average net income in the area. Starting date is the 1st of April 2023 or at a date decided in agreement between the two parties.
