The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), situated in Grenoble, France, is Europe's leading research facility for fundamental research using neutrons. The ILL operates the brightest neutron source in the world, reliably delivering intense neutron beams to 40 unique scientific instruments. The Institute welcomes more than 2000 visiting scientists every year to carry out world-class research in solid-state physics, crystallography, soft matter, biology, chemistry and fundamental physics. Funded primarily by its three founder members, France, Germany and the United Kingdom, the ILL has also signed scientific collaboration agreements with 10 other countries. The ILL's Science Division is currently seeking to recruit a:

Head of Computing for Science (M/F)

The role of the Computing for Science group is to participate in the development of a seamless, institute-wide data infrastructure for the acquisition, reduction and analysis of experimental data, with the aim of optimising the production of scientific results and experiment measuring times.
The group is involved in various in-house data treatment projects (e.g. Bastille in the Endurance programme) and also works on projects in collaboration with other European institutes (e.g. in SINE 2020). The group is, for example, currently deploying MANTID for data reduction at the ILL.

Duties:
You will be responsible for supervising and managing the team, which comprises 5 to 10 engineers and scientists. This will involve:
- Defining and implementing the strategic roadmap for the Computing for Science group
- Leading the Group and optimising its efficiency: hold regular meetings, anticipate and prevent problems, manage change, etc.
- Guaranteeing the service provided to in-house and visiting scientists
- Promoting a project-oriented work ethic
- Ensuring the continuous evolution of the group with respect to new technologies and science-driven requirements
- Establishing close collaboration with partners at the ILL: scientists and users of the different scientific instruments, and ILL experts in charge of instrument control and IT services within the ILL's Projects and Techniques Division
- Collaborating with other institutes within the framework of national and European projects in order to support a community approach to software.

Qualifications and experience:
During the course of your career, you have acquired a combination of scientific and software expertise.
Ideally, you have experience of using or working at large-scale research facilities.
You have successfully managed software development projects, in particular using modern programming languages (object-oriented, Python and C++).

Language skills:
As an international research centre, we are particularly keen to ensure that we also attract applicants from outside France. You must have a sound knowledge of English and be willing to learn French (a language course will be paid for by the ILL). Knowledge of German would be an advantage.

Benefits:
Generous company benefits (expatriation allowance), relocation assistance and language courses may be offered (for more information, please consult our employment conditions).

We are committed to equal opportunity and diversity; we therefore encourage both men and women with relevant
qualifications to apply.
