The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Software Scientist.

Description of directorate/division

The Integrated Control System (ICS) division is responsible for the design, construction, commissioning and operation of control systems for the ESS facility including Accelerator, Target, Neutron Scattering Instruments and Conventional Facilities. The Controls Software Group within the ICS division has the responsibility to deliver relevant software components and solutions for many aspects of the ESS control system.   

Description of main responsibilities

- Design, implement, benchmark and test a realistic model of the ESS accelerator capable of  running during the machine operations (the so-called Online Model)
- Support the design and implementation of the physics applications required to transport the beam from the ion source till the target of the proton linac. Examples are the scanning applications, the steering of the beam, the cavity phase scan, etc.
- Create the software tools for the data analysis of the physical measurement of the beam. Give simple tools to beam physicists to compare and correlate data from instruments (Beam Position Monitors, Beam Loss Monitors, etc.) with the devices of the machine (magnets field, cavities phase and energy, etc.)
- Design and implement procedures to automatise the operations of the accelerator in order to reach the top hedge standard of 95% of reliability of beam in target
- Participate in the construction and commissioning of the accelerator enhancing the state-of-the-art facility with new ideas and research capabilities.

Requirements

- M.Sc in physics, engineering, computer science or related fields
- Experience with at least one of the most popular beam dynamics simulation codes: MADX, IMPACT, TraceWin, OpenXAL, TRACE3D
- Extensive experience in software development in at least one of these languages: Java, Python, C, C++
- Demonstrated strong ability to interact effectively with a diverse group of scientists, technical staff and user groups; to work well in a team; as well as ability to take individual independent initiative, all in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
 
- A PhD in physics, engineering, computer science of related fields is considered a substantial plus
- Experience with the EPICS control protocol is a plus.
 
Demonstrated excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of other European languages would be an advantage.

Experience of working in an international environment is essential.

Duration & Location
The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.
