Introduction
Junior Systems Administrator in the Information Technology (IT) Department, Computing Facilities (CF) Group, System Administration and Operations (SAO) Section.

You will join:
.The Information Technology (IT) Department which provides computing services for all aspects of the laboratory's activities. These require a wide range of technologies and skills including the provision of computing facilities, local and wide area networking, platforms for computing environments, software development, databases, desktop environments and a wide range of system integration and management tasks.
.The Computing Facilities (CF) Group that manages and operates the CERN Computer Centre and associated Computing Facilities.
.The System Administration and Operations (SAO) Section which is responsible for the system administration of the servers hosted in the CERN main Central Computing Facilities. It also operates the computing rooms of the facilities.

Functions
As Junior Systems Administrator in the SAO Section, you will work as a member of the team responsible for the day-to-day operation of:
.CERN's large Grid computing fabric: 16,000 servers running the Linux operating system, over 250PB on-line disk storage and 140PB tape storage, 10,000 virtual machines.
.Windows services (roughly 600 servers offering file and application services as well as terminal service consoles), Web services (100 servers), and Mail services (65 servers).

Your main activities will consist of:
.Contributing to the automation of the system administration procedures;
.Participating in software development and maintenance activities in the CERN Computing Facilities;
.Helping in diagnosing problems, deploying firmware and maintaining systems in general;
.Creating and maintaining documentation and workflows for the team and improving work practices;
.Responding to alarms on production systems, most of them running Linux, in accordance with well-defined procedures;
.Organising hardware management in the CERN Computing Facilities;
.Participate in security related activities.

Qualification required
Higher technical diploma in the field of computing, or equivalent.

Experience and competencies
The experience required for this post is:
.Initial experience of Linux or Windows system administration, including installation, log analysis, task automation and shell scripting;
.Practical experience with one or more of Apache, Python, SQL and Perl would be a strong asset;
.Some experience of Puppet, OpenStack or cloud computing would be an advantage.

The technical competencies required for this post are:
.Programming/software development: Scripting (CGIi, Perl, Shell, Python) and database queries.
.System software administration: log extraction and investigation (Smart, IPMI), packages installation (rpm).
.Problem management: usage of a ticketing system.

The behavioural competencies required for this post are:

.Achieving results: having a structured and organised approach towards work; being able to set priorities and plan tasks with results in mind; being rigorous and producing quality results at first attempt; taking appropriate corrective actions and adapting work / project plans if necessary.

The language competencies required are:
.English or French: spoken and written. The ability to understand and speak the other language in routine situations would be an advantage.

Note on Employment Conditions
We offer a limited-duration contract for a period of 5 years. Limited-duration contracts shall terminate by default on their date of expiry. Subject to certain conditions, holders of limited-duration contracts may apply for an indefinite position.

These functions require:
.Require participation in a regular stand-by duty, including nights, Sundays and public holidays.
.Stand-by duty, when required by the needs of the Organization.
.Work during nights, Sundays and official holidays, when required by the needs of the Organization.
