Application & Software Unit is responsible for creating and delivering differentiating SW applications for Windows Phones.

Our unit is targeted to make a large impact in future business plans by providing applications that increase the number of our handsets sold, so we are now looking a senior individual who is motivated and energized to make a difference by applying his or her skills in Visual Computing.

You will hold the technical end-to-end accountability for the Phones Computer Vision system, spanning both hardware & software components, provided by several different teams within Microsoft. You will be responsible for specification and, at times, development of SW components in our Computer Vision projects. Your domain of work spans SW and HW, and you will have to be conversant both with C++ and C#. Your ability to self-direct builds upon your team working skills.

The main responsibility area is ASW Computer Vision (C-Vision, for short) domain and, due to the senior position, the individual should be able to serve as a good example to all lead developers. At times, engagement in domains outside C-Vision is expected depending on the background and interests of the individual.

You will lead the analysis of SW designs and implementations in ASW C-Vision, and drive design, specification, and implementation including performance & reliability testing. Your goal is to prevent late surprises and react quickly if they happen.

Main Responsibility Areas:

- Coding
- Ensure the continuous quality of the end-to-end system architecture in C-Vision domain
- Ensure the continuous and timely common technical understanding of a multi-site virtual team setup
- Clarify the roadmap with stakeholders: Prototyping advance development as to support productization decisions/selections, and reduce technical risks once the decision is made
- Identify the areas requiring system analysis and/or benchmarking
- Identify the areas where careful reliability and performance testing/instrumentation is required
- Responsible for end-to-end system performance and reliability: create and implement system performance & reliability tests
- Conduct performance & reliability benchmarks in selected areas
- Drive performance & reliability test automation, and assist the deployment
- Solve difficult technical problems
- As part of a team of senior experts, provide technical leadership, support, and coaching across ASW and other teams, inside and outside Lumia organization. It is expected that the individual can interface, influence and even drive others in MSFT and QC.
- Interface to other architects within MSFT and externally to QC
- Represent technical expertise in ASW decision making esp. milestone reviews of selected projects
- Ability and interest to manage/lead a project from time-to-time
- Ability to identify the areas that need early attention as to avoid surprises later. It is expected that the individual is able to bring such areas to attention of all stakeholders such that the right actions by the right people are prioritized

Qualifications

In order to succeed in this role, we expect you to have following skills and experiences:

- Hard core coding skills esp. C++
- Ability to communicate results in a factual and clear manner
- Ability to understand the entire C-Vision system or subsystems including the relevant aspects of HW
- Ability to explain complex technical issues such that others can understand quickly
- Experience in developing mobile SW
- At least 15 years of SW development experience, out of which, most spent on mobile SW development. Held the role of lead developer for many years
- At least 3 years of SW development in imaging and/or C-Vision related areas
- At least 3 years of Windows Phone development including C++
- Professional experience with GPU programming is definitely a plus. At a minimum, coded some GPU algorithm to learn.
- Breadth of technical knowledge combined with expertise (depth) in certain relevant areas (e.g., imaging, graphics, multimedia, data communications, depth calculation algorithms, and so forth)
- Extensive experience in SW and architecture design
- Excellent technical knowledge of mobile/embedded devices HW&SW architectures, including Lumia devices.
- Excellent leadership and/or team working qualities and capability to coach others
- Excellent analytical capabilities
- Ability to learn and advance one's technical and SW development skills
- Previous experience in managing projects is a plus.
- Master's degree in an engineering discipline (computer science, electronic/electric engineering, or similar). A PhD is definitely a plus.

The role can be based either in Espoo, Finland or in Lund, Sweden.
