The Department of Political Science has an open climate which encourages involvement in broader societal debates. Research areas of specialization include elections, democracy, corruption, governance, globalization, environmental politics as well as European studies. The department houses research programs such as QoG institute, Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem), Governance and local development (GLD) and The Swedish Election Studies Program. The department offers education on all levels; undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate, carried out in both English and Swedish. We have a total of 1,400 students enrolled in our courses, and 140 people are employed at the Department. The Department is centrally located in the city of Gothenburg.

The Quality of Government (QoG) Institute at the Department of Political Science at the University of Gothenburg was started in 2004 by professors Sören Holmberg and Bo Rothstein. The institute conducts research on how trustworthy, reliable, impartial, uncorrupted and competent government institutions can be obtained. The Institute is financed by external grants and currently engages about 25 researchers and doctoral students.

One aim of the QoG Institute is to make cross-national comparative data on QoG and its correlates publicly available. The datasets draw on a number of freely available cross-sectional data sources, including aggregated individual-level data with global coverage spanning. As an employee at the QoG institute, you would be part of an international vibrant research community and get insights into many research projects within the department.

The Quality of Government (QoG) institute at the University of Gothenburg is now searching for on or more Database manager for the QoG databases.

Job assignments

The main job assignments includes:

. Collect, assemble, and maintain datasets for quantitative analysis within STATA.
. Monitor, collect and analyze new data from research organizations, academic journals, and reports.
. Conducts quantitative data analysis utilizing statistical tools. Assisting senior researchers with quantitative data analysis and answering data related questions.
. Create tables, graphs and other visualizations to complement presentations and published material.
. Works with the program's web site coordinator to oversee content of project-specific web pages, publications, and data visualization tools.

The job assignment will also include investigating the opportunities to further develop the QoG institute's database and the web based interfaces.

Qualifications

We are looking for you with a master's degree in Social Sciences or equivalent. You should have good knowledge in statistical methods and have experience of data management in Stata, knowledge of R and LaTeX is a merit. Knowledge of database driven web application programming is a merit. You are expected to have excellent skills in using office software packages, especially in Excel.

Since the QoG institute wants to look into the opportunities to further develop the database and the web based interfaces, experience in development of databases such as php/mySQL and web based interfaces by HTML is very meritious.

You need to be analytical, have an eye for details and be a good problem solver. You are expected to have strong time management skills as well as the ability to communicate and collaborate effectively as part of a larger team. Fluency in English both oral and written is required (working language in the Institute).
Previous experience in a research project, particularly with quantitative focus, is merit.

It's desirable if you have some theoretical understanding in QoG related research areas but it's not a requirement.
