The Science Directorate at the European Spallation Source Eric in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Mechatronics Engineer or Software Developer.

Description of main responsibilities

The Mechatronics and Software Integration (MESI) platform within the Scientific Activities Division (SAD) is looking for a programmer with some electronics or mechatronics background. This position will take part in the development of control systems for Sample Environment Equipment (SEE), integration of SEE into the ESS wide EPICS control system and the development of a standard communication protocol for SEE's. SEE examples are linear changers, furnaces, humidity cells, stress strain analysis, pump-probe etc.
Your tasks will be to define requirements for integration of SEE with sample environment or instrument staff, as well as perform the integration together with the Integrated Controls Division. You will help setup and test the SEE control system structure. You will take part in the implementation of a new international SEE communication protocol standard at ESS. You will work towards our EU project partners and internally with instrument teams and other sample environment platforms within SAD.
Furthermore you will have close cooperation with the integrated control systems division responsible for EPICS at ESS. The position will also assist with general development such as procurements, setting up test lab and planning the future labs at ESS. 

Qualifications

You have a master in engineering or potentially a bachelor with suitable experience. The position will be focused towards computer engineering but a mix with experience from electronics or mechatronics are valued.

Skills in high level software development such as e.g. C, C++, Python as well as embedded are required. A suitable background from working with control systems, software integration or communication is highly favorable.  

At ESS it will be as important to be able to work independently and push the work forward as it will be needed to function well in international teams. You need to be able to work in a workplace continuously changing and to keep calm. Preference will be given to candidates with hands-on experience from existing facilities. Good English skills and knowledge in office etc is required.

The evaluation will be based on technical qualification. However, a genuine interest in this technology area and a positive approach will be come a long way. It is important that you recognize the value of consulting others in order to succeed.

A development project such as this requires the ability to adapt and cope with changing circumstances and as working in an international environment will challenge your ability to handle cultural diversity, it is important that you have successfully managed this in previous employments. Experience of working in an international environment is essential and we expect you to be fluent in written and spoken English.

As a person you are positive, open minded, creative, organized and motivated. You need to be able to cope with projects in development, which can involve changing project directions and frames. To make all interests meet it is important to be able to both listen to input, but still to be able to make decision to move forward.

Duration & Location
The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.
