Introduction

The ‘Sample Environment - Mechatronics, Control Systems and Integration’ (MESI) team is responsible for defining a control system structure for Sample Environment (SE) equipment and to provide the other SE teams with mechatronics development and integration into the ESS control system EPICS. In addition to these core tasks it is essential to set up MESI labs and to cover the interfaces with the teams (i) building the neutron instruments, (ii) providing the ESS-wide integrated controls, (iii) managing the data and experiment control as well as (iv) ensuring motion control and automation.

Position descriptions

Both positions will require hands on work with controls integration, which includes to (i) implement controls, (ii) gather integration requirements, (iii) coordinate with other support groups, (iv) develop and (v) test of control approaches. Development will involve finding suitable control system and structure as well as defining where to place control logic. Integration will involve working with different communications such as RS232, TCP/IP, EtherCAT etc. Examples of SE equipment are linear changers, furnaces, humidity cells, stress strain analysis etc. used to manipulate the parameters the sample is exposed to. In the current phase of the project other task are setting up labs as well as selecting and procuring equipment.

Position 1 - Mechatronics and Integration with focus on programming side

In addition to working in the areas above, an emphasis is on software systems, networks, and programming, develop simulators, version handling, but also PLC control etc. One important project is aimed to develop a new communication protocol standard for SE equipment. Other tasks are to help setting-up plug and play functionality of equipment when connected to different networks and configuring new hardware.

Position 2 - Mechatronics and Integration with focus on electronics side

In addition to working in the areas above, an emphasis is on analog and digital electronics. Tasks can involve connections of sensor boards, designing simpler PCB’s, soldering, setup control hardware, troubleshooting of SE, mechatronics development, setup and program controls on PLC systems, serial communication, microcontrollers and others.

Qualifications

To be able to perform the core tasks knowledge and experience is required from working with integration of equipment, programming, communication protocols, control systems, PID loop tuning. For both positions knowledge on EPICS and SE equipment knowledge is an advantage.

Position 1:

Suitable educations are master in mechatronics or programming, or alternatively equivalent experience. Skills in software development with e.g. Python, C, C++ are required. A suitable background from working with control systems, software integration, communication protocols as well as version handling, linux OS. PLC’s, state machines, embedded systems is a strong advantage. Good personal communication skills are essential.

Position 2:

Suitable educations are master in mechatronics or electronics, or alternatively equivalent experience. Skills in digital and/or analog electronics development are required. A suitable background includes experience from hands on electronics development projects in IO signal handling, interface to controls, sensor measurements, PCB design, amplifier circuits and controls. Further competence from PLC controls, control systems, mechatronics systems, software integration, embedded systems is a strong advantage.

At ESS it will be as important to be able to work independently and push the work forward as it will be to function well in international teams. You need to be able to work in a workplace continuously changing and to keep calm. A positive and friendly approach to wok and colleagues is essential. Skills in English should be good and normal office (excel, word or similar) software competence is required.
