The Science Directorate at the European Spallation Source ERIC in Copenhagen, Denmark, invites applications for a Scientific Software Developer for Experiment Control.

Description of Directorate/Division
The ESS will be the brightest source of cold neutrons in the world and a large-scale facility that will deliver state of the art instrumentation and software tools to the international materials and life science community. The Instrument Data Group in the Data Management and Software Centre delivers critical software infrastructures that make neutron scattering experiments at ESS possible and successful.

Description of Main Responsibilities 
The experiment control system is the scientific dashboard that allows users to control and manage all aspects of a neutron scattering experiment.

In particular, the role is to:

• Collaboratively develop the experiment control framework for the European Spallation Source
• Coordinate development with in-kind partners, external collaborators and ESS stakeholders
• Support deployment and evaluation of test systems at the ESS test beam line

Qualifications
M.S. in Computer Science or natural sciences is essential, PhD in natural sciences or Computer Science preferred. An ideal candidate has experience of development and operational support of large mission critical software frameworks at large scale neutron or photon facilities, using modern software development practices in an object-oriented language.

Experience with two or more of the following technical or scientific areas is essential:

• Python
• Qt
• C++
• EPICS 
• working with agile software development techniques
• network control of devices
• scientific experiment control
• data acquisition 
• experience of developing user interfaces

You should be able to work effectively and responsibly in large, diverse teams, across multiple sites. Good communication skills both oral and written are required. The working language of the ESS is English.

Duration & Location
The position is permanent with three months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Copenhagen, Denmark, you should expect to visit ESS Lund on an at least weekly basis.
