The Department of Neuroscience includes several research groups working on different aspects of nervous system function, both under normal conditions and in various disease states. Research projects include a broad range of studies on the molecular and cellular levels, networks of neurons, and the organization of the nervous system as a whole. The Department has a flat organization with 40 researchers, of which 24 are full professors and 65 PhD students.

Teaching represents a fundamental activity at the Department, which participates in several undergraduate courses and postgraduate education programs. Each year approximately 15 students receive their PhD from our Department and many of our graduates have gone onto distinguished careers in the academic or private sector.

The International Neuroinformatics Coordinating Facility (INCF) is an international organizationlaunched in 2005, following a proposal from the Global Science Forum of the OECD to establishinternational coordination and collaborative informatics – and currently has 17 member countries acrossNorth America, Europe, Australia and Asia.

INCH establishes and operates scientific programs todevelop standards for neuroscience data sharing, analysis, modeling and simulation while coordinatingan informatics infrastructure designed to enable the integration of neuroscience data and knowledgeworld worldwide and catalyze insights into brain function in health and disease.

KEY FUNCTIONS
We are now announcing a position as System clouds engineer. The candidate will be responsible for overseeing, advising on and developing INCF neuroinformatics infrastructures including the coordination, deployment and monitoring of a range of cloud/ HPC technologies for use in neuroscience applications. He/she will work with and advise members of the international community about applying these technologies to their application areas. The candidate will also coordinate maintenance, web services, and back-end issues for the INCF web portal, and contribute to scientific projects in which INCF participates.

The candidate will work closely with a contractor responsible for INCF systems administration for the INCF Secretariat to help ensure a functioning internal computer infrastructure.

Area of responsibilities/duties
• Assess needs, monitor, support and extend international cloud-based data infrastructures
. Provide development support to INCF projects
• Work with IT contractors and pro-actively monitor services provided by them
• Perform development work and installation of new services
• Perform a wide range of system administration duties at the INCF Secretariat
• Oversee and maintain all internal IT infrastructure and anticipate future needs
• Manage the INCF infrastructure committee and its projects

EDUCATION/ EXPERIENCE

Required :
BSc and 5 years of related experience or MSc and 3 years of related experience or PhD and 1 year of related experience.

Desired :

Education/Experience MSc in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical
Engineering, Information Technology, and/or related technical discipline. 5+ years’ experience in a technical field.

SKILLS

Required :
Python, Amazon Web Services (EC2,S3), iRODS, Java, Linked Data, Macintosh, Unix/Linux and Windows, SQL databases (Postgres, Oracle, MySQL, or others), and third-party applications. Development experience with Python and/or Java Experience in one or more scripting languages (Python, PHP, Ruby,Perl, etc.). Experience with TranSMart, Neo4j, Drupal/Wordpress. Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment. Ability to work in an agile, dynamic environment, grasping complex systems/tasks. Ability to manage project milestones and budgets. Ability to organise meetings of technical committees. Comfortable and clear in communications with people from science, administration and IT A result- and service oriented approach, taking
ownership for actions. Focus on delivering quality solutions. Excellent written and verbal
communication skills in English.

Desired :
Experience with large data sets/analysis, Hadoop, scientific computing. Training or experience with distributed programming environments such as Hadoop/ MapReduce. A fast learner and a problem solver with an optimistic approach to challenges. Emphasis will be put on technical excellence, interpersonal skills and initiative.
Familiarity with neuroinformatics infrastructures.

This position may require overnight travel up to 10% of the time and involve some irregular working hours due to collaboration in different time-zones.
