SEI is recruiting a highly motivated software developer with a strong background in data processing, analysis and software development and a strong drive for innovation. The successful candidate will contribute to an exciting and innovative development in global supply chain sustainability – the Transparency for Sustainable Economies (Trase) platform (http://www.trase.earth).
The successful candidate will be part of a team of researchers working on the technical development of the Trase platform, including tool development, database maintenance, code optimization, as well as research on land-use change and sustainability inspired by Trase.
Your main responsibilities:
• Software technical development of the unique supply chain mapping approach that underpins Trase (SEI-PCS, Spatially Explicit Information on Production to Consumption Systems) which allows for linking global consumption of traded commodities with regions of production at sub-national scales
• Manage the data pipeline from source files to database, processing, and visualizations
• Maintain and develop the system´s back-end, including by optimizing the current code (Python) and adapting it as the amount of data increases and new applications are created
• Develop new software applications and databases for Trase including around compiling, organizing and analysing trade and financial flow data as well as data on environmental and social impacts
• Contribute to research publications, international workshops and a range of activities developed by the research team behind Trase.

Who you are:
The applicant should have a strong background in data programming, and an interest in helping to tackle some of the major environmental and sustainability challenges the world is facing in the 21st Century. The candidate is expected to be capable of working both independently and in team in a highly flexible and exciting research environment.
Key qualifications:
• Degree in computer science, physics, mathematics, engineering, natural sciences or related field.
• Advanced knowledge in at least one programming language such as Python, Java, JavaScript, C, Julia, Ruby (including object-oriented programming). Some previous experience of Python is however a requirement.
• Experience working with relational databases (SQL, preferably PostgreSQL)
• Experience with version control (Git) and collaborative software development (GitHub)
• Experience with developing and maintaining a large code base and big data statistics
• Familiarity with data analysis environments such as R, S-PLUS, Matlab etc
• Fluency in English
• Familiarity with data visualization technologies and software libraries, such as d3, is desirable but not required.
