Backend Developer (Node.js) for gaming startup in Stockholm

We are Just Football and we want to make people play football, with more different people. Our goal is to take the computer/mobile game experience out on the pitch. We are digitalizing football by combining real football challenges with a virtual career on your phone. On our online platform, players compete in a mobile game by playing football in real life.

What have we accomplished?

We have launched in Sweden with the biggest star in the national team, John Guidetti. Currently 1000s of hours of real football are played in the app, every day! To put that into perspective: that’s more than the biggest football clubs in Europe… Every day we get 100s of messages from kids all over Sweden telling us how much they love the product.

That’s a lot of numbers, but behind every message and football challenge there are kids doing what they love. We have ourselves visited countless pitches, talked to these players and seen both how they are outside and exercise more, and how new friendships are being born. And this is really the essence of what we want to create: combining virtual with real life.

What’s the next big challenge?

Football is the most popular sport in Sweden. Currently we have 30k players and by the end of the year we are expecting to double that. Next year, during the football World Cup, we will expand into new markets in Europe. With millions of people playing football all over the world, this presents the ultimate scaling challenge for the backend.

Right now the backend has a semi-monolithic structure and is hosted at AWS. We want you to break it into bits! The goal is to move towards a microservice architecture. The transition is well on its way but more and bigger challenges remain to solve that will be key for next summer.

Right now, we can handle smaller markets like Sweden, but when we approach Spain, UK and Germany, that will pose bigger challenges to scalability, speed and reliability. So we are looking for an experienced backend developer who can take our backend to the next level.

Who are we looking for? Doing what it takes!

Our users have high expectations, both on the product experience and its reliability. So we’d love if you:

1. Have experience of working hands-on as a software developer in an agile environment, and in multiple programming languages
   (right now most parts are written in Node.js, but microservices give more flexibility)

2. Have worked with Node.js, Go and/or Python

3. Have deep knowledge of how to write robust, maintainable applications, and a reasonable understanding of how to build and work with distributed, high-volume backend services (preferably on AWS)

4. Care about quality and you know what it means to ship high quality code
