2020 marks a milestone in the mobile age. 2020 is the year when the 5th generation of commercial mobile networks is launched and Ericsson are leading the development of 5G by being the market leaders in research and development. Ericsson are investing heavily in research and development and as a part of this major project are looking for skilled software developers. As a newly graduated developer this is a huge opportunity to learn and contribute in a technologically advanced environment alongside skilled co-workers. For the senior software developer the biggest difference will be the developing environment, the big variation in work as well as the possibility to influence how you conduct your own work. The developmental environment itself stands out due to the large investments that have been made over the last few years. The developers themselves have chosen what tools they want to work with and this has resulted in a cutting-edge environment with for example a lot of Open Source tools.

This truly is a unique opportunity. The life span of a product like 5G is approximately 20 to 30 years. Being a part of the project in this early stage means you’ll have great opportunities for the years to come and have a chance at becoming an expert in the field. At the moment about 3000 employees worldwide within Ericsson are involved in the 5G development, and approximately 250 of these are situated in Linköping where a lot of the high level traffic control is developed. The work is centered around systems so large and complex that no single person can be an expert in all areas of it. Your contribution matters greatly though, and the lines of code that you as a developer produce will end up being used millions of times per day by the approximately 3.5 billion users Ericsson has.

Ericsson are looking for talents who wants to be part of leading the 5G generation journey. They are using the concepts of Cloud implementation, Virtualization, Data mining, Big Data, Machine Learning and AI in the 5G solution. As a software developer you will develop new products as well as modify existing ones. The duties consists of reviewing code and analyzing feasibility of design within the existing time and cost constraints. Your responsibilities will span several parts of the product life cycle including design, development and documentation. Your level of experience is not the most important part since both newly graduates and more experienced developers are needed. If you are a technically interested person looking for a stimulating work environment surrounded by cutting edge technology and skilled colleagues, this is might be the right position for you. More important than your years of experience is that you enjoy programming and solving problems.

You will be a part of an agile team consisting of about seven to eight people. Within the team there is a large variation in terms of backgrounds, previous experience and competences. Within the team each team member are specialized within different areas, but everyone are involved in the different stages. Even if your specialty is for example coding or validation, you will still be involved in the testing phase. This leads to a broader perspective of the whole product cycle and an end-to-end way of thinking.
