The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Computer Scientist in Beam Physics position in the Accelerator Division.

Description of division

The Beam Physics section of the Accelerator Division at ESS is opening a summer job position on development of high-level physics applications.
The candidate will join a vibrant and multi-cultural beam physics section within the ESS Accelerator Division. The work will focus on the evaluation of available options for graphical analysis in Java/JavaFX, including possible upgrades and development of required features/functionalities.
Description of main responsibilities

The Beam Physics section in ESS is responsible for the development of the High-level Physics Applications that will be used throughout commissioning and operation of the ESS linac. In order to develop these applications, we use an open-source Java Based development environment for creating accelerator physics applications, scripts, and services called OpenXAL. This package, created at a similar laboratory in the US (SNS), is based on an old Java library (Swing) for GUI interface. In order to keep the newly developed ESS application up-to-date and extend functionalities, it was decided to move from Swing to JavaFX. The plotting package that comes with JavaFX is quite limited and no new features are planned to be added soon. For this reason, it is important for us to find a good way to properly display measurement results, live measured data, large data sets and more.
The summer project will consist in:
• Evaluation of a new plotting package to be used together with the Chart package in JavaFX.
• Development of new features and preparation of examples using the package functions.
• Evaluation of 2D plotting and plotting speed and efficiency of large data sets.
• Written report.
