Viaplay - Java Developer

THE POSITION

By being part of our cross-functional Java Team you will take responsibility and pitch in where needed as a valued member of an autonomous team that gets to work with the fun stuff! We work with Java and some Node.js in a micro services architecture that runs in AWS. An example on some bleeding-edge tech we are working with would be Java 11, REST, HATEOS, Maven, Spring, SparkJava, Vert.X and we are always open to try out new stuff. In this role you would be working in a cross-functional team (client and backend development, QA, UI/UX) with a main focus to deliver business-critical services to bring value to our customers. Doing so by creating new end-to-end features and continuously adding functionality to the Viaplay product in an iterative way.

THE CHALLENGE AHEAD

• Design, build, and maintain APIs, and services
• Debug production issues across services and multiple levels of the stack
• Work with engineers across the company to build new features at large-scale
• Improve engineering standards, tooling, and processes
• IAM (Identity and Access Management)
• Commerce (e.g. signup, backend purchase flows, payment meta-data such as pricing etc)
• Identifying and improving parts of the services to make them more robust, resilient and scalable
• Deploy services in Amazon AWS and monitor rollouts and everyday service behaviour using Splunk, Grafana and AWS tools
• Running services on your local machine using Docker for some serious testing sessions
• Identifying, improving and implementing service metrics using Prometheus
• Going bananas trying out some new cool programming language, technology, tool or framework during our recurring Viaplay Hack Days

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

As a Java Developer at Viaplay, you will be an important contributor in expanding our APIs and building (micro)services for our platform. Ideally we are looking for someone that is well versed in the Java landscape but who is not afraid to try out new programming languages. Also, someone that has experience in problem solving regarding performance, resilience, scalability etc. If you in addition to this feel comfortable and enjoy working in an open climate where you find solutions to problems together we would be super happy!

SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES ALSO MEET THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS:

• Solid work-life experience of Java Development
• Enjoy and have solid experience in building APIs
• Thrive in a collaborative environment, reviewing code and being open to feedback
• Actively takes ownership and responsibility of high quality code
• Knows the right balance between elegant solutions and time-to-market solutions
• Experience and understanding of full software development life-cycle
• Experience in developing services in the cloud, preferably AWS

BONUS REQUIREMENTS THAT WILL MAKE YOU STAND OUT FROM THE REST:

• Experience working with a state-less and high transactional end user product
• Professional experience developing web based services, using Node.js
• Experience of working with some frontend magic as well, such as React.js
