Expert in scientific computing F/M

You will join the Scientific Computing group and as part of the European PaNOSC (Photon and Neutron Open Science Cloud) project. PaNOSC brings together 6 major world-class European research infrastructures to create a fully integrated, pan-European information and analysis infrastructure supporting the open access and easy process of scientific data. You are responsible of developing a framework for virtual neutron experiments.

Duties:
As the main responsible locally of PANOSC's workpackage 5 (VINYL: Virtual Neutron and x-ray Laboratory) you will:
- Develop an accurate instrument description using ray-tracing tools (in particular, McStas) together with a database of signals from representative samples to be used as benchmarks for the virtual experiments.
- Expose those tools to external users through remote desktop and execution environments, providing also access to local HPC resources.
- Create script examples (possibly in the form of Jupyter notebooks) demonstrating the full workflow and the interaction between different elements (experimental and simulation databases, x-ray tracing tools, reduction and analysis software, etc.).
- Coordinate the activities and collaborate with the other project partners, in particular with the other neutron facility involved (ESS).
- Interact with the IT department to setup and maintain the needed infrastructure.

Qualifications and experience:
- Master's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Physics or a related discipline.
- Good knowledge of modern object oriented programming languages, in particular C/C++ and Python.
- Good knowledge of software development process, best practices and tools: version control, build systems, continuous integration, testing, debugging, profiling, etc.
- A Professional experience as software developer would be appreciated.
- Excellent technical, analytical, problem solving, team playing and communication skills.
- Additional experience in one or several of the following points would be highly valued: Ray-tracing simulations / Scientific computing and data analysis / Neutron science and/or instrumentation / Software design and architecture / JavaScript, web applications, servers, cloud platforms for scientific projects / Git, CMake and Jenkins.

Language skills:
As an international research centre, we are particularly keen to ensure that we also attract applicants from outside France. You must have a sound knowledge of English and be willing to learn French (a language course will be paid for by the ILL). Knowledge of German would be an advantage.

Notes:
This post is a Fixed-term contract of 3 years.
Medical fitness for work under ionising radiation is required.
