Software architect

Schibsted News Media is looking for an experienced developer or software architect to help design scalable systems used by millions of people. We own several of the biggest newspapers and internet sites in Norway and Sweden like VG, Aftonbladet, Aftenposten, SvD, BT, and smaller sites like tek.no and godt.no.

News Media product and tech is the central organisation behind our news sites. We enable the media houses in Schibsted to spend less time and money on building and maintaining digital products by creating platforms.

We are a large technology organisation with over 200 engineers in Oslo, Stockholm and Krakow. Our teams use agile practices when developing, and they follow the «you build it, you run it» principle for operations. Most of our infrastructure is already in the cloud. Our next big challenge is adding self-service to our platforms to speed up collaboration between teams.

As a software architect, you will work with different engineering teams to help implement our strategies across the organisation. You will assist teams in establishing and implementing our architectural vision and strategy. We expect you to be proactive and focus on the long-term picture - while at the same time keeping an eye on current needs and opportunities.

Your primary responsibilities will be:

- Help establish the architectural vision, goals and principles.
- Identify the current challenges and provide a clear plan to address them. Document and communicate the architectural roadmap.
- Initiate, lead and promote technical discussions, making sure that all angels are covered and that all sides are being heard
- Contribute to, influence and align News Media’s technology strategy with the Schibsted ones.
- Ensure scalability, performance and security in adherence to defined technology strategies.
- Drive technology convergence and architectural evolution across the organisation.
- Drive large technical efforts and change programs, e.g. migrations, technical evaluations, complex tech debt prioritizations
- Advising and guiding in technology choices

Skills and Requirements:
We would like you to have most of the following:

- Excellent skills in spoken and written English. Proficient in a Scandinavian language is a big plus.
- Excellent communication skills to present solutions to different types of audiences, both verbal and in writing
- At least 3-5 years experience as an architect, senior software developer or technical lead
- Experience designing and developing applications for high traffic internet sites
- Experience designing and developing large distributed systems
- Experience in web application development in Javascript/Typescript or experience in backend programming in Java, Scala, Go, Python or PHP
- A Bachelors or Masters Degree in Computer Science or similar
- Good knowledge about architecture principles in public cloud environments like AWS, Google or Azure

Product & Tech is responsible for product development and technology platforms for News Media brands. The unit consists of product managers, software engineers, UX experts, and user researchers. Most of our teams work distributed, with colleagues in Oslo, Stockholm, Krakow, Gdansk, Bergen, and Stavanger.
