ESS is now looking for a Instrument controls engineer to support our Hardware and Integration group. 

About the Team
The Hardware and Integration group is responsible for the integration of all hardware in the ESS facility into the integrated control system. This includes a diverse flora of different systems ranging from PLC systems for water flow control to fast FPGA-based data acquisition systems. All integrated towards the Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System software framework. 

About the role
The main responsibilities associated with this position are:

• Interacting with Integrated Control System (ICS) stakeholders to define requirements, design and develop control systems for neutron instruments

• Document and analyse stakeholder and internal requirements
• Take part in developing control systems and control system integrations
• Take part in the agile development team supporting our instrument and beamline projects
• Implement and realize the designed solutions
• Troubleshoot and optimize performance of existing solutions
• Maintain and support the delivered solutions

• Interacting with ICS’s partners

• Support partners with technical discussion and reviews
• As part of the agile team supplement and integrate deliverables from partners
• Maintain and support systems delivered by partners

• Participate in planning and reporting 

• Reporting weekly progress/issues/next steps to work package managers

• Ensure that all work is executed in accordance with ESS quality assurance and safety procedures
• Actively participate in work with deliverable and process quality

About You:

We are building ESS from the ground up, so we need someone who is comfortable not only following procedures, but also creating them. We attach great importance to personality and attitude, so we're looking for a real team player: Someone who is sociable, has excellent communication skills, who likes to collaborate with different people and who is committed to helping this amazing project to realise its full potential. We need a hands-on self-starter who is able to work in a structured, organised, responsible and – most importantly – safe way.

For you to be successful in this role, we require that you have: 

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in engineering, technology or science
• 2 years or longer of experience in scientific collaboration in a role enabling collaboration between scientists and engineers 
• 2 years or longer of experience in writing technical documentation for scientific instruments and experiments
• Experience from work with software development (C/C++ or similar)
• Experience in agile development and collaboration, preferably in a Scrum team 
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills
• Excellent oral and written English skills, including developing technical control system documentation in English

It would further be to your advantage if you also have:

• Higher academic degree in related topic
• Knowledge of other European languages

Experience from EPICS integration and development

• Experience from “big science” projects
• Experience and knowledge about quality assurance and verification of control systems
• Experience from complex, international technical/scientific projects

Duration & Location

The position is permanent with six months initial probation period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.
