System Engineer & Application Support

KITS Infrastructure Team
The KITS Infrastructure group is within the technical division and provides MAX IV with a wide range of IT solutions to support the operation of the facility which is dedicated to performing high performance scientific experiments with a world class source of X-ray light.

Many of these experiments generate large amounts of data and therefore the IT services include HPC computing, high speed networks, peta-byte storage as well as a range of other IT technologies, including virtual compute farms and scalable computing with various services to support the office, administrative as well as scientific computing activities.

Being part the KITS group, you will be in close collaboration with your IT practitioner team colleagues as well as scientists, software and hardware engineers and scientific software experts. MAX IV is looking for a System Engineer who will
be involved in the application support of the software infrastructure of MAXIV. You may participate and contribute to international collaborations and conferences about Research Facility Software. You will also be able to learn and to increase your skills, competence, and experience.

Your main work tasks will be

- Maintaining and developing applications used in operation.
- Setting up environments and setting guidelines for putting applications into the production environment
- Participating to the infrastructure teamwork, planning and resource estimation as well as improving the group infrastructure.

To be successful in this role you need to have the following qualifications

- A professional experience with software operations of a variety of different platforms.
- Experience with Docker, Ansible, Linux Administration, bash scripting
- Demonstrated experience developing in one or more web backend technologies
- Strong communication skills, fluent in English

Experience in one of more of below are seen as merits

- Kubernetes, Python, Wiki, PHP

MAX IV is a Swedish national large-scale research laboratory hosted by Lund University. It provides scientists from Sweden as well as internationally, with state-of-the-art instrumentation for research in areas such as engineering, physics, structural biology, chemistry and nanotechnology. Fully developed it will receive more than 2 000 scientists annually, conducting ground-breaking experiments in materials and life sciences using the brilliant X-ray light.

The MAX IV Controls and IT team (KITS) deliver solutions to the whole MAX IV organisation in the areas of control system hardware, controls software applications, infrastructure and networking, information management and scientific software. This is a dynamic and highly challenging environment and requires close collaboration with the staff in order to understand the needs and be effective in forming solutions. We are around 50 people in total who work in 5 domains in a well organised and agile way. We hold values of lean management, knowledge spread, user autonomy, continuous improvement and flexibility as guiding principles for our work.
