The European Spallation Source ERIC (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, is one of the largest science and technology infrastructure projects being built today. The project includes the most powerful linear proton accelerator ever built, a five-tonne, helium-cooled tungsten target wheel, 15 state-of-the-art neutron instruments, a suite of laboratories, and a supercomputing data management and software development centre. In the context of its history and future as a scientific organisation, however, it is more than the sum of its parts. It is a brand new Big Science organisation and we are building it from the ground up.

About the role 

We are now looking to appoint a System Reliability Engineer to our Controls Infrastructure Group, within our IT Division. The System Reliability Engineer will work in a functional unit consisting of five members of staff. The team is tight-knit, collaborative and supportive. 

Tasks and responsibilities include to: 

• Build and maintain relationships with facilities team in locations where IT server equipment is hosted and carry out firmware upgrades, and supervise hardware repairs.
• Monitor and report on key metrics across server rooms, including temperature, humidity, cooling performance, space utilization and power and develop good working relationships with stakeholders, while maintaining a firm approach to policy and process enforcement.
• Plan and physically install and maintain data centre servers (compute, virtualisation and storage) as well as deploy and maintain Linux operating systems and associated infrastructure software.
• Maintain up to date system documentation (inventory, vendor support contact information, system architecture and topology) and ensure that the change management and issue tracking processes are adhered to.
• Provide support and maintenance of existing and future server, storage and related applications for performance monitoring.

This is a 3-year fixed term position with the possibility of extension, based in Lund, Sweden. In the future, this role may require some on-call and/or shift work, which will be compensated for according to our collective agreement. We need someone who can start as soon as practically possible. 

About you 

Ideally you have a higher technical diploma or equivalent relevant experience in the field of ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) or a related field, or equivalent working experience. You have several years’ experience from the tasks above and you are comfortable with using the Linux command line interface and distributions such as RedHat or Debian, are familiar with the Bash shell or Python and Infrastructure as Code (IaaC) such as Ansible, Puppet or Terraform as well as familiarity with storage technologies such as ZFS or distributed storage technologies such as Ceph or GPFS. You have worked in an international environment, for example within academia, R&D or industry.

Last but not least you enjoy learning and have a great interest in technology.

Fluency in written and spoken English is a requirement, as it is the working language at ESS.
