ABB Corporate Research Center in Sweden is located in Västerås, about 100 kilometers west of Stockholm. Togetherwith our colleagues in other R&D centers, we develop technologies for future products and services of ABB's core businesses.

You will be part of the Robotics & Mechatronics team at ABB Corporate Research in Västerås, Sweden. In our role as ABB Corporate Research, we ensure ABB's technology competitiveness now and in future.

In the Robotics & Mechatronics team we focus on robot concepts / design, autonomous and intelligent robotics, and robot applications in both industrial and service robot segments. Our research activities are usually formulated as technology pre-study and technology development projects. We work closely with ABB's robotics business to ensure our research will bring unique value for ABB's future business. At the same time, we have close collaboration with the academic world to bridge the academic and industrial research. In this team, one of our historical highlights is the creation and development of the dual-arm YuMi robot concept and the mobile YuMi concept.

This position reports to Robotics and Mechatronics Team Manager

Your responsibilities

  • You will be part of creating new technologies that are crucial for the factory-of-the-future in discrete manufacturing. More specifically, the focus will be mainly in software development for autonomous robots using computer vision and artificial intelligence.
  • The candidate is expected to have in-depth knowledge and rich experience in implementing software into robotics systems, to explore autonomous robot manipulation scenarios under semi-structured environments.
  • This requires good theoretical knowledge and experience in the fields of software engineering, artificial intelligence and machine learning. Good understanding in robot applications both in simulation and with real robots is considered a merit.
  • You are expected to drive specific activities to successful conclusion while following a visionary continuity in your work. To succeed in this position, you should be capable of working both independently and in a team. You will be working in an international environment. It is therefore required that you have good communication skills in English.

Your background

  • A M.Sc. or Ph.D. degree of education in the subjects of robotics, computer science or artificial intelligence.
  • 2-5 years experience in developing software for robotics or computer vision is required.
  • Demonstrated experience working in robotics, either in simulation or with physical robots.
  • Demonstrated experience working on computer vision.
  • Knowledge in ROS 1 and ROS 2 is considered an advantage.
  • Deep knowledge in Linux (Ubuntu) is considered an advantage.
  • Knowledge of modern software development practices such as git/agile/continuous integration is considered an advantage.
