At the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences (BioEnv) we have teaching and research activities that stretch from the alpine ecosystem, through forests, cultivated land and streams, all the way into the marine environment. In these environments we study different levels of biological organisation from genes, individuals and populations, to communities and ecosystems. We work within ecology, evolution, physiology, systematics and combinations of these fields in order to understand the impact of natural and anthropogenic changes of the environment.

The department is placed at three different localities: in Gothenburg Botanical garden, at Medicinarberget in Gothenburg, and at the marine research station that is run by the Sven Lovén Centre for Marine Infrastructure-Kristineberg. The current position is placed at Gothenburg Botanical Garden.

Project description

This project’s goal is to develop smartphone and web applications for anyone to share photos of species and work together to identify the species. This requires an easy process of logging species via a smartphone, so that the general public as well as academics can use the software. The software is intended to be used globally and the crowdsourced data collected will be useful for the research and policy-making communities to make data-driven decisions to protect the world’s biodiversity.

Job assignments

The position is as Research Assistant but the work will be as a Mobile Software Developer on the project. The work requires constant iterative mobile development, within a quick development cycle. The candidate must be able to absorb and transform feedback from users into deliverables and quickly adapt to user needs.

The applicant must have experience with mobile development. Priority is given to "web->native" development using ReactNative, native iOS development in iOS Swift and Android Java. We take a strong view towards personal development and growth, so the candidate should expect to be challenged and to learn new things. Enthusiasm about biodiversity, social entrepreneurship and outdoor activities is a big plus! We operate in English.
