Senior Engineer/Team leader

About the position

We are currently seeking a candidate for a full time Senior Engineer in the Networks department of the Section for Communication Systems (ComSys) at Simula. The Networks department focuses on robustness and security of ICT infrastructures, in particular resilience in mobile broadband networks and applications from a measurement perspective, through prototyping and through theoretical studies.

You will be the technical team leader in charge of the design, development and maintenance of a research infrastructure devised to measure and monitor mobile broadband networks. You will need to establish a thorough understanding of the needs and requirements of our in-house research team, infrastructure users and stakeholders such as telecom operators, regulatory authorities and ministries. You will base your designs of technology and work processes on these insights. You are also expected to take part in the practical engineering work, hereunder to perform hands-on tasks such as programming, system administration, troubleshooting measurement nodes and back-ends, as well as communicating with our node-hosting partners.

You will work in a team of scientists and engineers and have the overall responsibility to coordinate, lead and participate in the technical work. The technical team consists of three engineers in Oslo as well as technical personnel at project partners in Europe and Simula¿s software development subcontractor in Poland. From time to time you will need to travel to our partners and device work processes that can secure efficiency and quality of a distributed development team.

In its current version, the research infrastructure is devised for measurements and experimentation on the Norwegian commercial telecom and broadband networks (http://nntb.no). It forms the basis for highly profiled research in ComSys, and the Norwegian Ministry for Transportation provides long-term financial support to the activity. Recently, the activity has been granted significant funds from EU with the aim of extending the infrastructure to several European countries as well as facilitate for broad third party access and experimentation using the infrastructure. This expansion, together with increased attention from stakeholders, demands an increased focus on stability, predictability and functionality of the infrastructure.

Your Profile

We are looking for candidates that recognize themselves in the following profile:
Experience in technical project and team management consisting of highly qualified personnel building larger ICT systems
Strong technical background in Linux, programming, scripting and databases as well as intermediate knowledge of IP networking and protocols
Strong practical skills, both in terms of systems design and process design
Experience with network programming, hardware and interest/experience in virtualization. Basic knowledge of cellular technology is a plus.
The ability to collaborate closely with others, and exhibit personal initiative in order to pull processes and drive them forward to decision.
Master both Norwegian and English written and spoken language.
Structured working habits, and documentation as part of these habits
Willingness and ability to learn new technologies and adapt to changing requirements.

The leadership role requires excellent communication skills and openness to adopt new ideas and directions. Earlier industrial experience will be considered an advantage.
