Main responsibilities of the Depertment

Active Safety is an area where Volvo, through continuous launching of new, innovative, and world first safety features, has positioned itself among the leaders of the automotive industry. Now the work continues to reach our ambitious vision that by 2020 no one should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo. Within the department, we develop systems such as Collision Avoidance, Autonomous Drive, Automatic Parking, Driver Support and Protective Safety.

We strive to be world leading in Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Autonomous Driving (AD), offering customers most comprehensive, convenient and safe ADAS functions as well as being the first to offer truly autonomous driving function. Before these functions can be released in customer vehicles, it is required to rigorously verify the performance and safety, make sure that these work as designed in changing and unpredictable traffic situations and do not endanger the driver or surrounding road users.

As the number and complexity of ADAS/AD functions increase and new functions need to be introduced more and more often, traditional testing in prototype vehicles becomes prohibitively long and expensive. Instead, virtual testing in Hardware in Loop (HIL) rigs and Model in Loop (MIL) environments is used to test the systems faster, more safely and efficiently.

CAE Engineer Hardware in Loop

You will be a member of the Active Safety HIL team and participate in a broad range of activities: planning, building and running HIL environment, integrating sensors, ECUs and actuators, developing and deploying models for rest of vehicle and environment, developing test procedures and supporting test activities. You will be collaborating within and outside the team to get the expert knowledge about HIL methods, but even about ADAS and AD systems. The challenges are many, among these redundant steering and braking architecture and software, multiple new sensors and new ECU platform that need to be integrated in the rig and enable verification of autonomous platform.
